KANCHANJUNGA TREKKING - 22 DAYS (KAN-22)

Day 01. Flight Kathmandu to Taplejung (Suketar) then trek to Tambawa: The flight from Biratnagar to Taplejung (Suketar) takes about 30 minutes. Kukhetar airport is situated at the height of 2020 meters.

Since this flight arrives in Suketar in the morning, you can start your trek from the same day to Tambawa. The trail climb gradually upto elevation of 2300 meters through rhododendron covered ridge. The trail crosses the ridge and contour past the Deorali Khola and four more through strems to a pass at 2570 meters. Then decent to Limbu Village called Thembewa at 1880 meters.

Day 02. Tambawa to Keswa: From Tambawa, the trail ascends a bit to a ridge, then drops steeply through Shimu and Pokara village to a suspension bridge across the Phewa Khola at 1430 meters. Then the trail climbs steeply to Kunnjari, a Limbu village at 1700 meters. From here, the trail makes a long, looping traverse to Bhanjyang, a Gurung settlement with several bhattis, on a pass at 2120 meters, From here you can see Kanchenjunga and Kyabru. The trek has now entered the Kabeli Khola Valley , but you will spend the next two days climbing up and down, in and out of ravines and over ridge, only to end up in Yamphudin at the bottom of the valley. Then you will reach Keswa, 1960 meters.

Day 03. Keswa to Mamanke: Pass below water falls and cross several streams and a landslide to reach the village of Phun Phun (Funfun). Descend through a series of side to side valleys to a ridge 1850 meters, then drop a bit to Phonepe village at 1780 meters. Descend steeply to a suspension bridge at 1540 meters. Then climb to Mamanke, a prosperous Limbu village at 1810 meters.

Day 04. Mamankhe to Yamphudin: Climb to a ridge and then descend gradually to the Tenguwa Khola. Forego the decrepit bridge, cross the stream by jumping from stone to stone. Switchback steeply up to another ridge marked by a chorten and prayer flags, then descend across rubble and rock slides and crosses another stream. This portion of the valley is steep and portion of the trail are on cliff high above the river as it makes its way down to the Kabeli Khola at 1640 meters. Stay on the west side of the Kabeli Khola, climbing gently to Yamhphudin (1690 meters) at the junction of the Omje Khola and the Kabeli Khola. Yamphudin is a mixed community of Sherpas, Limbus, Rais and Gurungs. A goat trail leads from Yamphudin up the ridge to the west, to Helok and the Tamur Kosi Valley .

Day 05. Yamphudin to Omje Khola: Cross the omje Khola on a couple of bamboo poles and follow the Kabeli Khola upstream for a short distance. After you passe behind a ridge out of sight of Yamphudin, cross a small stream and take a trail that heads straight uphill. Zigzag up though fields of corn and barley to Darachuk and keep climbing past meadows to Dubi Bhanjyang, a pass at 2540 meters. Descend through ferns and big trees to the Omje Khola at 2340 meters and follow the stream uphill for a short distance. Cross the stream and go a bit further upstream to a campsit.

Day 06. Omje Khola to Torontan: From the stream, the trail makes a steep climb through bamboo to a Kharka at Chitre (2929 metres) and continue up to a notch. The trail passes through a forest of Pines and Rhododendrons to a pond at Lamite Bhanjyang, 3410 meters. On a clear day this ridge provides views of Jannu and of the Taplejung road far to the south.

Day 07. Torontan to Tseram: The hike starts in forest, then crosses landslides to Tsento Kang, a goth at 3360 meters. An hour beyond is a Buddhist Shrine. Peaks begin to appear in the distance as you climb further. Then climb to Tseram, a large, flat meadows at 3870 meters.

Day 08. Tseram to Ramche: Climb through forests to a slide area, the junction of the trail to the Mirgin La is nearby. Stumble across a stream on a loose, rocky path and climb to some mani walls and a stone house near the tree line at 4040 meters. The Peak of Rathong and Kabbbbru (6700 meters both) loom at the head of the valley. The trail climbs into the valley alongside the moraine of the Yalung Glacier. The valley opens up as you approach Yalung, a pasture full of lyaks at 4260 meters. Climb alongside the moraine through scrub junipers up a stream to a lake at Lapsang, 4430 metres. Keep Climbing to another lake and a big meadow at Ramche, 4620 meters. The view is dominated by the spectacular Rathong peak situated on the Nepal-India border to the east.

Day 09. Day trip to Yalung Glacier: Make a day trip to the Yaoung Glacier. Follow a stream alongside the moraine for a long distance, then bear right to climb onto the moraine itself. From a chorten at 4800 meters, there is a fine view of the Kanchenjunga south face. A short distance beyond the chorten is viiew of Jannu.

Day 10. Ramche to Tseram

Day 11. Tseram to Gunsa: The Mirgin La route actually crosses five passes, the unnamed pass of 4724 meters, Sinion La 4660 meters, the Mirgin La 4663, again unnamed pass 4115 metres and Tamo La 3900 metres.

Day 12. Ghunsa to Khambachen: The trail makes a gradual ascent along the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola, then crosses back to Rambuk Kharka on the north side of the river. Then you will reach to Khambachen, a Tibetan settlement of about a dozen houses at 4040 meters.

Day 13. Acclimatization Day in Khambachen: It is again time to stop and acclimatize. There are view of the high peaks near Kanchenjunga , Khabour, Phole, Nango Ma and Jannu. Climb a ridge above the village for more views or take aday hike to the Jannu base camp.

Day 14. Khambachen to Lhonak: The trail climbs gradually through open tocky fields to Ramtang, 4240 metres, then across moraines northwest of the Kanchenjunga Glacier. Lhonak 4790 metres is near dry lake bed on an open sandy plain. Terrific mountain views abound in all directions.

Day 15. Lhonak to Pang Pema: You can not see the main Kanchenjunga peak from Lhonak, for a view of this peak you must go on to the base camp at Pang Pema, 5140 meters. The spectacular main peak of Kanchenjunga and a panorama of other peaks that make up one of the largest mountain in the world tower over the single roofless hut at Pang Pema.

Day 16. Pang Pema to Khambachen: Take a moraning hike up to the ridge north of Pang Pema. A climb of 200 to 300 meters provides a vantage point with views of Kanchenjunga, Wedge Peak, the Twins, Pyramid Peak and Tent Peak. As usual, the descent goes faster, you can easily get back to Khambachen in a single day.

Day 17. Khambachen to Ghunsa
Day 18. Ghunsa to Amjilassa
Day 19. Amjilassa to Chirwa
Day 20. Chirwa to Linkhim
Day 21. Linkhim to Taplejung (Suketar)
Day 22. Flight Taplejung (Suketar) to Kathmandu
