Trekking in Nepal

A trekking trip can be of any length you choose, lasting from a week to months. The hill country is breathtakingly beautiful, with pretty villages, attractive houses and sacred temples, as well as subtropical lowlands, vast meadows and forests, fast flowing rivers, deep canyons and the cold and barren regions below the mountain peaks.

Annapurna Circuit – Throng La Trek (ANN-THR-21)
This is a rewarding trek, providing the opportunity to explore the scenery of both the northern and southern Himalaya. From thick fir and rhododendron forests to the harsh, thin atmosphere of the Tibetan plateau, the ethnic groups encountered range from lowland Hindu to highland Buddhist cultures as varied as the landscape.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Annapurna Ghorepani Trek (ANN-GHO-7)
An interesting and relatively easy trek passes through picturesque mountain villages, forests of bright rhododendron and a variety of ethnic groups and cultures. The highlight and high point of the trek is Poon Hill, which offers the best panoramic views of the high Himalaya in Nepal - Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and the mesmerizing fish-tail pinnacle of Machhapuchhre.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Annapurna Jomson-Muktinath Trek (ANN-MUK-16)
The trail along the Kali Gandaki has long been a trade route between India and Tibet and you will share the trail with horse, mule, and pony caravans. The temple of Muktinath, although dedicated to Vishnu, is sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist and many ascetic sadhus gather here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek (ANN-SAN-16)
The combination of easy walking and majestic scenery makes the trek to Annapurna Base Camp (4200m), commonly known as Annapurna Sanctuary, one of the most popular treks in Nepal. Enjoy mountain views, thick bamboo and rhododendron forests and a mix of cultures unparalleled by other treks as you venture deep into the Annapurna Himal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dhaulagiri Empire Trek (DHA EMP 18)
Separated from the Annapurna region by the Kali Gandaki and the Dhaulagiri massif, this area includes more than 30 peaks over 6000 meters, eight of these surpassing 8000 meters. From Dhorepatan the panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges is exceptional and this remote area is home to communities of Tibetan refugees who search the area for minerals and medicinal plants.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dhaulagiri French Pass Trek (DHA-FRE-22)
This trek takes you from the semi-tropical regions thick with ferns and forests through hillsides ablaze with rhododendron into the alpine wilderness of snow-capped peaks and glaciers. This is a tough, yet spectacular trek surrounded by the colossal peaks of Dhaulagiri. Much of the route is on snow and glacier as it crosses French Pass and traverses the head of Hidden Valley to cross Thapa Pass.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dolpo Phoksumdo Trek (DOL-PHO-11)
Climb through the pine and juniper forests of the beautiful Suli Gad. Deep gorges and waterfalls are features on the route to the small village of Ringmo on the shores of the turquoise Phoksumdo Lake. Tiny Buddhist and Bonpo monasteries are numerous here and you may have the chance to join monks at their morning prayers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dolpo Shey Gompa Trek (DOL-SHE-26)
Here sweeping views stretch as far as the arid Tibetan Plateau. Dolpo has been home to Tibetan people since the 10 th century when the area was part of the western Tibetan region of Ngari and time has changed little here. People live, cultivate their land, herd their flocks, trade livestock and salt and follow traditions that have held since time immemorial. The acclaimed movie ‘Himalaya' is a poignant portrayal of this stunning land.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dolpo Tarap Valley Trek (DOL-TAR-19)
This region offers opportunities to visit ancient villages, high passes, beautiful lakes, isolated monasteries and also to experience the vast array of wildlife inhabiting the region, including Blue Sheep, mountain goat, jackal, wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard. The people follow an amalgam of Buddhist, Bon, Shaman and Hindu traditions and behind many houses throughout Dolpo you will find carved wooden faces, dok-pa, which offer protection against evil spirits.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everest Base Camp Trek (EVR-BC-17)
From the tiny airfield of Lukla the trail leads through Sherpa villages, forests of fir and rhododendron and across high suspension bridges meeting caravans of zopkyo (a yak-cow crossbreed) along the way. Namche Bazaar is a colorful, bustling market with traders from surrounding villages and as far as Tibet. From Tengboche the views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam are sensational.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everest Cho-La Trek (EVR-CHO-21)
Following the exciting mountain flight into Lukla you trek to the Sherpa market town of Namche Bazaar. Continuing up the Gokyo Valley there are excellent views of the Thamserku and Kang Taiga summits. From Gokyo Peak the 360-degree panorama is stunning - snow peaks, Nepal's largest glacier, moraine and tranquil glacial lakes. From here descend to cross the glacier and moraine to the east and the pass of Cho La or Chhugyuma (5420). Between rocky walls the route leads to the Khumbu valley where Gorakshep provides the opportunity to ascend Kala Pattar for more spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, including the black rocky ramparts of Everest's southwest face.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everest Gokyo Trek (EVR-GOK-16)
Trek up the Dudh Kosi to its source – a tranquil glacial lake below the huge Ngojumba glacier. There are fewer trekkers here than on the route to Base Camp, allowing you to enjoy the quiet of the mountains, its birds and wildlife. The views from Gokyo Peak (5200) are stunning. Five summits over 8000m are visible – Everest, Lhotse Shar, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu as well as the Ngojumba Glacier (the largest in Nepal), moraine and lakes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everest Salpa Trek (EVR-SAL-22)
This trek begins with a mountain flight, always exciting, to Tumlingtar before heading into the beautiful and remote Arun Valley in the eastern Everest region. The area is astoundingly rich in flora and fauna, with numerous species of birds and animals found nowhere else in the country. The trek passes through the fertile tropical valleys to the Salpa Bhanjyang pass and along alpine ridges to reach the Dudh Kosi Valley, heartland of the Sherpa. Continue into the rugged mountain terrain at the base of Everest where the peaks of Nuptse (7879m) and Lhotse (8511m) tower above as we approach the summit of Kala Pattar (5545)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everest View Trek (EVR-VIE-9)
This route into the Everest region is one of the busiest in Nepal. After the exciting mountain flight into Lukla, ascend the Dudh Kosi Valley to the Sherpa settlement of Namche Bazaar. A day's walk through lovely forests to the famous Buddhist monastery of Tengboche is rewarded with views of Everest rising behind the Lhotse / Nuptse wall and the stunning peak of Ama Dablam. The peaceful village of Khumjung provides a glimpse of traditional Sherpa life.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ganesh Himal Trek (GAN-17)
A mere 70kms from Kathmandu the villages of the Ganesh Himal preserve a traditional way of life. One of the best treks in central Nepal, it takes you through the lower, warmer regions leading to the south face of Ganesh Himal. This is the realm of the Tamang.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Helambu Trek (HEL-7)
The most accessible of all trekking regions, Helambu offers a low altitude, distinctly enjoyable walk. In Tamang and Sherpa villages meet friendly and hospitable people with strong family and cultural ties.
It is a region where steeply cut rice terraces and deep green valleys give way to rich forests of oak and rhododendron, all set against a distant horizon of mountain peaks.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek (KAN-28)
This is an ideal trek for those with the time and desire to venture into some of the remoter regions of Nepal. It features incredible mountain and glacial terrain inhabited by a variety of ethnic groups. Kanchenjunga is the eastern cornerstone of the Himalaya. The mountain's name means Five Great Treasure Houses of Snow, and at 8586 meters, it's the world's third highest mountain. Because of its remoteness, Kanchenjunga trek offers the rare opportunity to explore an area where traditional life continues, little touched by the outside world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kathmandu Valley Trek (KAT-VAL-4)
Few people opt to trek around the Kathmandu Valley, yet the insight it offers into the lives, history, culture and religion of Nepal is unrivalled. Each season has something special to offer: planting, harvest and a changing profusion of wild flowers. From viewpoints on the valley rim (1000-2800m) Everest is visible to the east and Annapurna to the west. The Himalayan dawn in Nagarkot is awe-inspiring.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Langtang Gosainkund Trek (LAN-GOS-18)
The Langtang Himal and the Jugal Himal are renowned for their picturesque and distinctive peaks. The valley between them is one of the world's most beautiful. This narrow valley lies just north of Kathmandu and was designated Nepal's first National Park in 1971. Trekking here offers the opportunity to explore Tamang villages, to climb small peaks and to see glaciers at a comfortably low elevation. Much of the route is through semi-tropical forests where moss covers the ground and lush fern and orchids cling to tree trunks. During the full moon in August, the sacred lake of Gosainkund is the goal of thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Ends with a walk through Helambu.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Langtang Valley Trek (LAN-13)
This narrow valley lies just north of Kathmandu and was designated Nepal's first National Park in 1971. Trekking here offers the opportunity to explore Tamang villages, to climb small peaks and to see glaciers at a comfortably low elevation. Much of the route is through semi-tropical forests where moss covers the ground and lush fern and orchids cling to tree trunks. During the full moon in August, the sacred lake of Gosainkund is the goal of thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manaslu Trek (MAN-21)
Circumnavigating Manaslu is one of the toughest treks in Nepal, one with sensational mountain views and one of the most dramatic of Himalayan passes, the 5213m Larkya La. Much of this trek is in the region known as Nupri, an area of strong Tibetan influence with the trade routes between the regions still active. Newly opened to trekking.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mustang – Lo - Manthang Trek (MUS-17)
Mustang is the arid region at the end of the Kali Gandaki, beyond the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Lower Mustang is inhabited by people related to the Manangis while in northern Mustang (the ancient Kingdom of Lo), language and traditions are almost purely Tibetan.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Royal Trek (ROY-6)
This easy and enjoyable trek in the Pokhara region offers good mountain views, including Machhapuchhare and Annapurna. There are no long trekking days or long steep ascents. Ideal for those who have never tried trekking before. Despite acquiring its name after Prince Charles (with an entourage of 90!) trekked here in the 1980s, this is not a particularly heavily trekked area.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Siklish Trek (SIK-8)
This trek provides the magnificent views afforded by the Annapurna, yet less busy and suitable for a wider range of fitness levels. The less traveled trails of Siklish offered the perfect answer, with Ghalegaon village a particular highlight. Suitable for children.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhairav Kund – the Sacred Lake Trek (BOR-SAC-9)
Both Hindus and Buddhist devotees visit this high-elevation holy mountain lake to pay their homage and bathe during every Bhadra (August) Full Moon. The views of the high Himalaya are spectacular. Walk through fascinating villages and visit a famous nunnery.
